2011-2012 Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1: To encourage registered parishioners to become more fully involved in the sacramental and community life of the parish.
Objectives
  1. By January 2012 conduct a survey of young single adults ages 18-30, to determine their interest in participating in activities with other Catholic young adults.

  1. By February 2012, form a focus group of young single adults to analyze the survey results and identify activities that are of interest to Catholic young adults.

  2. By April 2012, plan at least one activity for Catholic young single adults to take place in June 2012.

GOAL 2: To equip and empower our active Catholic members to exercise their Baptismal call to evangelize.

Objectives

  1. Develop the knowledge and skills of the Evangelization Core Community through use of the resource “JumpStart evangelization kit” by March 2012.
  1. Inform parishioners via written materials, verbal encouragement and modeling of their responsibilities and opportunities for evangelization beginning in Jan 2012.
  1. Plan, publicize and implement an Evangelization Workshop for all interested parishioners following the summer Parish Mission in June 2012.
GOAL 3:T o review the Parish ministerial structure, including the Pastoral Council Charter and ministry categories.

Objectives

  1. By January 2012, form a committee to review the Pastoral Council Charter and ministry categories that will include the Pastor, Pastoral Council Coordinator, Pastoral Associate, a deacon, a former Pastoral Council Coordinator, a current Pastoral Council member and two parishioners.
  1. By April 2012, present any revisions recommended by the committee to Pastoral Council for review and final approval.
  1. By June, 2012, finalize changes to the Pastoral Council Charter and Parish Ministerial Structure and publicize changes to the parish through various means.

2010-2011 Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1: To encourage registered parishioners to become more fully involved in the sacramental and community life of the parish.
Objectives
  1. Establish a neighborhood mentoring program to connect newly registered parishioners with active parishioners by June, 2011.

The "Good Shepherd Neighbors" mentoring program has been established using Microsoft MapPoint linked to the parish database. 15 neighborhood mentors volunteered to coordinate contacting their neighbors and welcoming newcomers; 582 Good Shepherd parishioners assigned to mentors. A web page has been designed to describe the ministry and its goals; it was also advertised through flyers and Facebook postings. A flyer is given to each newcomer registering in the parish.  There will be a once a year meeting to get the mentors together.
  1. By December, 2010, create an ongoing plan for an   activity for the current year’s RCIA class with the assistance of the previous classes to help the current class integrate more fully into parish life.

A covered dish luncheon was held on May 15, 2011 honoring 20 newly received Catholics, including those confirmed as adults; 3 RCIA candidates and families and 3 RCIA Formation Team members attended. The Goal Team recommends that the welcoming function for the new Catholics be combined with the Welcome Dinner for new parishioners.

  2. Develop and implement a strategy by June, 2011 that helps newly married couples become integrated into our parish community.

A survey for newly married (5 years or less) parishioners was developed and sent to 93 couples; 31 responded (1/3) which is good. The survey asked specific questions about what couples would like and how often they would like to do it.  Carrie Milhous has previously coordinated a ministry for young marrieds and will use the data collected to form a team that will focus on creating opportunities for young marrieds to gather.  After discussion, the Goal Team decided that this objective should really be further developed by a Marriage Ministry team.

  3. By December, 2010 adopt an implementation timeline for other identified activities and priorities.

After reviewing the recommendations for activities identified last year, the Goal Team decided that many of them were repetitive and have been met through the establishment of the neighborhood communities.

GOAL 2: To complete the development of the Evangelization Core Community (ECC) that will provide on-going leadership and coordination of evangelization efforts.

Objectives

  1. Finalize the organizational  structure of the ECC, including membership, leadership, regular schedule for meetings etc. by December, 2010.

Once a plan is put together, pulpit announcements will be made asking for church members to join us in the effort to bring Evangelization outreach to Good Shepherd.  The team needs to determine whether the ECC is an overseeing committee engaging evangelization efforts with current ministries or an engaging committee acting with our focused mission to evangelize to our determined audiences.
  1. Identify and prioritize target audiences by February, 2011.

With the Good Shepherd Sunday Worship members as our first target, we should also consider other audiences as we take on more members and through Shared Wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit discern to reach out to other areas of our Tallahassee Community.
  1. By June, 2011, develop and begin implementation of strategies to reach the target audiences.

Work to enlarge the membership of the ECC.  Then the members take through the Summer and early Fall to develop an implementation strategy on how to present Catholic Evangelization efforts to the target audience.

2009 - 2010 Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1: To create an ongoing ministry that will plan and implement at least one parish mission per year.
Objectives:
  1. Revise, review, and present to the Pastoral Council for affirmation the Mission Planning Manual by December 2009.

The Mission Team believes the manual is a work in process and, as such, will never be complete, but will always be revised, and expanded.  The broad outline is completed, the individual presenter requests, requirements along with new ideas are being added.

  2. By December 2009, secure three-year commitments from a total of ten parishioners to establish the Mission Planning Team.

The Team is now comprised of 9-10 active members.

  3. Schedule an annual Parish Mission for the next three years in coordination with the Adult Faith Formation Advisory Team, contracting with outside speakers and scheduling on the parish calendar by June 2010.

Plans for the 2011 mission are progressing and there are suggestions for the 2012 mission.  As finalists are determined, they will be put forward to the Faith Formation Team for input, evaluation and review.

GOAL 2: To encourage registered parishioners to become more fully involved in the sacramental and community life of the parish.
Objectives:

  1. To provide a method, by December 2009, to follow-up with newly registered parishioners and with people who recently received or participated in the sacraments such as Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Matrimony.

Brainstorming resulted in two key areas:
    A.  Electronic Communications: Team members strongly urged the creation and use of FaceBook and other electronic means of communicating parish events and news.  The parish Facebook page is up and running: Good Shepherd Catholic Parish Tallahassee.

    B.  Neighborhood, Family, and Small Group Mentoring: Using software available to the parish, a three step process has been suggested but is still in progress.

    • Use the church bulletin and pulpit announcemenst for interested families to sign up as mentors for newly registered parishioners;
    • Have a meeting with those that are interested to explain in detail the concept and what we hope to accomplish;
    • Begin the program as new people register in the parish by assigning a volunteer-family-mentor in their neighborhood.

  2. To begin implementation of the follow-up plan no later than March 2010.

Several activities have been identified:

1.  Have a celebration/Sacramental service sometime around  Thanksgiving for all parishioners who received any sacraments during the past year.

2.  College freshmen/high school seniors reunion: We missed the window of opportunity this year, but hope to have fully implemented next year.

3.  Plan and host an activity for newly married couples.

4.  Plan and host an activity for RCIA class of 2010, with assistance of 2009 class.  We have set the date for the first event which will be August 12th.

Goal 3: Prayerfully form an Evangelization Core Community who will provide leadership and coordination in the area of evangelization and who will welcome all in the name of Christ Jesus.

Objectives:

  1. Gather and study resource materials, including the U.S. Bishop's Plan for Evangeliation, to assit in determining future action plans by November 2009.

Many resources, including the U.S. Bishop's Plan for Evangelization were collected and reviewed. Additional paper-based articles and books were also used.  While the gathering of materials, reading and learning about evangelization should be an ongoing effort, the Core Community has obtained enough to provide a basis from which to move forward from.

  2. Publicize the formation of the Evangelization Core Community through various means including personal invitiations and pulpit/bulletin announcements, extending the inivitation for interested parishioners to participate in the development of the ECC by February 2010.

While the Core Community certainly needs more members, this goal could be considered complete because the Core Community was formed. However, there needs to be a continued effort to bring parishioners into the Core Community.

  3. Based on objectives 1 and 2, recommend key areas of focus for upcoming Good Shepherd evangelization efforts by June 2010.
There is a substantial amount of important groundwork that should be done prior to determining key areas of focus.  The Evangelization Core Community will generally focus on efforts external to the parish.

2008 - 2009 Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1: To create an ongoing ministry that will plan and implement at least one parish mission per year.
Objectives:
  1. Develop a Mission Planning Manual that will include the logistics for planning timelines, publicity, facilities, hospitality, liturgy, etc. for Parish Missions by March 2009.

The Mission Planning Manual is partially written.

  2. By December 2008, invite parishioners to join the Mission Planning Team and to make a commitment for a term of three years.

    Ongoing.

  3. Schedule an annual Parish Mission for the next three years in coordination with the Adult Faith Formation Advisory Team, contracting with outside speakers and scheduling on the parish calendar by July, 2009.

The parish mission, entitled Families of Faith; the Spiritual Dimension of Relationships with Fr. Louis Papes is set for Sunday, July 19, Monday, July 20, and Tuesday, July 21.  Additionally, The Passion was shown on March 8, 2009. Planning for summer 2010 parish mission is also underway with the possibility of Dr. Carol Razza for July 18-20, 2010.

GOAL 2: Continue to strengthen the ministry that reaches out to the elderly and homebound through visitation and phone calls by June 2009.
Objectives:
  1. Develop a variety of ways to meet transportation needs of the elderly and homebound by June 2009.

Brenda Popp, Team Leader, is researching possible transportation options other than direct transportation provided by parishioners.  The group is going to brainstorm this objective at the January meeting.

  2. Continue to strengthen the ministry focused on visitation and phone calls by June 2009.

There are 25 active volunteers and 9 additional volunteers have signed up for the training that will be held on Feb. 21 at 10:15 am.  There are 18 parishioners receiving services.  We need to get the word out that visitation and phone contact services are available because we now have more volunteers than we have needs.

  3. Provide a workshop for Caregivers by April 2009.

BrendaPopp conducted a Caregiver’s Workshop at the Senior Center in collaboration with Elder Care Services in January, 2009.  She will repeat the workshop for Good Shepherd parishioners on Saturday, April 4, 2009.

  4. Investigate ways to coordinate needs of the elderly for repairs with Good Shepherd Builds Ministry by June 2009.

The “Good Shepherd Builds” ministry is coordinating repairs that are needed by the poor and elderly currently served by Good News Outreach.  We have not yet received any requests from parishioners.

Goal 3: To encourage registered parishioners to become more fully involved in the sacramental and community life of the parish.
Objectives:
  1. Objectives are still being discerned by the Pastoral Council.

2007 - 2008 Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1:  Provide authentic Catholic teaching to at least 50% of active parishioners in order to promote the sense of reverence for al l the sacraments, especially the Eucharist.

Objectives

  1. By Fall 2007, create an Adult Faith Formation Advisory Team to begin development of a parish pastoral plan for adult catechesis.

  2. An Adult Faith Formation Advisory Team (AFFAT) began formation in September 2007, under the direction of Bette Scaringe, Director of Religious Education, and initial teachings on catechesis were led by Fr. Craig Smith.  In April 2008, the AFFAT began the process of identifying its vision and discerning goals and objectives, with Dee Lopez as its facilitator.

  3. By Spring 2008, schedule “Catholicism for Ordinary Catholics” sessions on Marriage, Families, and Intimacy.

Due to Apologetics classes extensively offering classes on Marriage and Family life for 2008-2009, it was decided to not pursue a separate class.
GOAL 2: Establish additional on-going parish experiences of faith that encourage the development of a personal relationship with Jesus (renewal rather than educational experiences).

Objectives

  1. By January 2008, form a standing Parish Mission Planning Team to plan regular parish missions to occur on at least an annual basis.

A parish mission featuring Fr. Robert Young was held July 20-22, 2008. The theme of the mission was "Praying with Passion:  A Prayer Driven Life." The team is in the process of planning the summer mission for 2009 (July 19-21).

  2. By April 2008, host monthly renewal nights that will incorporate music, prayer and witnesses to share and teach about developing a personal faith relationship.

This objective has been implemented through Parish Movie Nights and Family Rosary. The Passion movie was shown in the Community Center during Lent, 2008. The Family Rosary began in May and is being held on the first Saturday of the month following the 9:00 AM Mass. The Passion was also shown March, 2009. Scheduling additional movies is under review.

  3. By January 2008, identify facilities and opportunities for parishioners to attend retreats at facilities away from the Parish, and to publicize these opportunities to the Parish community.

Facilities and opportunities for parishioners to attend retreats away from the parish have been identified, but have not yet been publicized to the parish via the church web page, bulletin, and a brochure on the ministry cart.

GOAL 3: Establish an outreach ministry to provide services to the homebound, elderly and other parishioners in need, which would include visitation, transportation, home repair, and additional support.

Objectives

  1. By February 2008, identify parishioners who are homebound and elderly.

Identifying parishioners who are homebound and elderly has begun with sign-ups after Mass on April 19-20 and requests for referrals from our Bereavement Ministry, Communion for the Homebound Ministry, the Young at Heart group, and Deacon Ed Melvin’s hospital visitation ministry.  A parish listing of all parishioners over the age of 70 is also being utilized to help identify those that might want these services. This ministry is also advertised on the church web page with contact numbers for those that would like to either request its services or be a volunteer.

  2. By March 2008, identify services and opportunities that are provided by non-profit community organizations for the homebound and elderly.

    In progress.

  3. By June 2008, implement a ministry that reaches out to the elderly and homebound through visitation and telephone calls.

Brenda Popp has agreed to be the Ministry Coordinator.  All volunteers received training and information on working with the elderly in May from Jim Croteau and completed the diocesan volunteer requirements. The further identifying of each referred person’s needs is underway and then they will be matched with a volunteer for home visits or phone calls.

2006 - 2007 Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1: Deepen the sense of reverence for all the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, through providing authentic Catholic teaching to at least 50% of active parishioners.

Objectives

1. Beginning Fall 2006, have a teaching from the pulpit on one of the seven sacraments – at least once a month (weekend Masses) with particular emphasis on the Eucharist.

Homilists focused on Eucharist on several occasions at all Masses

2. By Fall 2006, schedule “Catholicism for Ordinary People" -- 3 topics, 3 classes per topic, 3 different teachers

A series of short teachings on the Eucharist was presented last Fall by Deacon Marcus; last Spring Fr. Craig presented several teachings on Reconciliation.  This objective will continue during 2007-08 focusing on Marriage.

3. Have a leadership team review and implement liturgical practices and norms in order to inspire more reverent behavior in Mass beginning Pentecost, 2006.

Suggestions were passed on to the Worship Leadership Community for discussion and possible implementation.

GOAL 2: Establish additional on-going parish experiences of faith that encourage the development of a personal relationship with Jesus (renewal rather than educational experiences).

Objectives

1. Increase participation in Small Christian Community programs by 20% within 2 years.

This goal was transferred to the Small Christian Community Core Community for continued discussion and implementation.

2. Build a “meditation walk” by 9/2007.

The Stations of the Cross “meditation walk” was completed in the North parking lot in March 2007 and was dedicated on June 9, 2007.

3. Invite parishioner and future outside witness speakers to share their personal testimony with parishioners in a public forum on one evening at least once a year to begin by Fall, 2006.

A parish mission, held this past August, provided teaching (by Fr. Smith) and personal testimonies from several parishioners (Julie Bettinger, Bob Schuchts, Dennis Scarry) regarding how Grace was/is experienced in their lives.

4. Encounter Christ Incarnate on a Saturday (Fall, 2006) through experiences of Mass and prayer service combined with outreach to elderly, disabled, migrants or others in need.

An Advent “Fiesta” December, 2006 provided an immersion experience for parishioners to meet Christ incarnate in the migrant workers in Quincy.

GOAL 3: Energize and motivate existing parishioners who attend Mass, but are not involved in parish activities to become involved in at least one activity or ministry.

Objectives

1. Facilitate a personal invitation to participation in ministry by forming small communities by Fall, 2007.

This goal was transferred to the Small Christian Community Core Community for continued discussion and implementation.

2. Raise awareness and promote involvement in ministries among Mass goers through coordinated use of brochure racks, web site and bulletin inserts by Fall, 2006

A welcome wagon was completed last Fall and many ministries have prepared brochures outlining their mission.

3. Increase awareness of activities and ministries through regular social events that will highlight a selected ministry and facilitate recruiting beginning Fall, 2006.

All ministries were contacted and encouraged to participate in the annual Ministry Fair which was held last October, 2006.
