Green Activities 2009
The following Good Shepherd green activities were accomplished in 2009:
Building Parishioner Awareness
- Coordinated an Earth Day Event in April 2009
- Developed educational media focused on Water Conservation for RE Students
- Sold Low Carbon Diet books
- Published “Green Tips” in Weekly Bulletin
- Created a GS Environmental Stewardship Website
- Communicated with ministries to encourage green events
Investigate Changes in Parish Operations and Activities
- Had an energy audit conducted by the City of Tallahassee for all church properties
- Reduced the amount of paper used at Masses and events
- Continued installation of CFL bulbs
- Established Good Shepherd Green policies
- Reduced the use of hot water on parish property
- Signed an electrical services agreement with the City
- Maintained the Rain Garden
- Provided plates and silverware for ministries to use for events
- Began using plates and silverware for Welcome Dinner and other receptions when possible
Green Activities 2008
The following green activities were accomplished at Good Shepherd in 2008:
Building Parishioner Awareness
- First meeting of Green Team ministry in May, 2008
- Stewardship of Creation “green tips” in the bulletin each week
- Sold 100 copies of “Low Carbon Diet: How to lose 5000 lbs in 30 days” on Earth Day, April 22
- Green Team display and banner at the Ministry Fair
Investigate Changes in Parish Operations and Activities
- Ordered recycling container for Community Center
- Contacted City of Tallahassee to provide larger recycling bins for outside so that we can recycle more
- Replacing all light bulbs with CFL as they burn out
- Investigated solar panels through visits to other churches
- Obtained the grant for the Rain Garden and implemented planting
- Started talking to ministries about cutting down on paper goods. Stopped buying bottled water for events we coordinate.
- Parish staff using dishes and cloth napkins for lunches
- Increased paper recycling in classrooms by putting a box in each classroom
